In addition to our mailing list of individuals and groups, calls for future papers, for both the Journal and subsequent conferences will be sent out on the following lists:

English @University of Pennsylvania (see their site)

SOCREL

NATREL

Mandrake e-newsletter (subscribe here)

Which are useful to subscribe to in any case, but anyone who has submitted articles to us in the past (or if that does not apply to you, you can sign up at the address given in the paragraph below) will automatically be included on our bulletins and call for papers lists. We encourage people to re-circulate calls for papers to other lists and individuals.

If you wish to be removed from our listings, please send us a blank email, with the title “Disenchant JSM” to socacademicstudymagicATbtopenworld.com, replacing the AT with the @ symbol. (We have had to remove all direct emailing links from the site due to relentless spamming of this site) and you will be removed from the lists. Please be patient, as this is done by a human being, not automatically by a computer, so you may receive one further news bulletin before you are removed.

Please note that the orientation of the Society for the Academic Study of Magic, and thus our journal, is toward the scholarly study of magic and its history, sociology, philosophy, psychology, art, literature etc., rather than its practical application. In other words we intend to publish rigorously-researched material ‘about’ magic, rather than instructions of  ‘how to do it’ or personal memoirs of magical practice, since those angles are already well-covered in both conventional print and the internet.

We cannot recommend a particular teacher, coven or magical practice to enquirers, nor do we perform spells for you.
