SASM- Who Are We and Why are
we here?
We are postgraduate students and tenured academics working on studies of magic, occultism, alternative spirituality etc:
Established at Bristol, England in 2002 by two postgraduates, Alison Butler and Dave Evans, the Society for the Academic Study of Magic (SASM) was created to further communication and exchange among scholars interested in the study of magic throughout the world and encompassing all eras. Its range of concerns includes, but is by no means limited to, the history, sociology, philosophy, psychology, anthropology of magic, magical practices and theories of magic, as well as magical objects, artifacts and texts. We are avowedly cross-disciplinary and thus would be interested to hear from anyone in ANY academic discipline, and freelance researchers involved in studies of such subjects. In furtherance of its ends, the Society aims to:
Anyone who has submitted articles to us or made any positive comments
in the past will automatically be included on our bulletins and call for papers
lists. If you wish to be removed from our listings, please send a blank email,
with the title “Disenchant JSM” to the mailing list address given below and
you will be removed from the lists. Please be patient, as this is done by a
human being, not automatically by a computer, so at busy periods you may
receive one further news bulletin before you are removed.

If you wish to be included on our mailing list please
email us at socacademicstudymagicATbtopenworld.com, replacing the AT with the @
symbol. We have had to remove all direct emailing links from the site due to
relentless spamming
We deal with 99.9% of enquiries by email. Please only use snailmail if you have to, for example for sending us review books (please note that receipt of an unsolicited copy of a book for review does not oblige us to review it if it is not suitable for our Journal- it helps to ask first, by email). Article submissions must be by email, since our editorial board are scattered all over the globe and thus the review process is done electronically for the sake of speed. Having said that, any remaining matters which absolutely must be dealt with over terrestrial mail can be sent to:
Dr Owen Davies,
JSM
Department of Humanities,
University of Hertfordshire,
Hatfield,

UK
This is NOT the
address to order copies of the Journal from, see ‘journal’ page on this site.
Thanks.
We are all unpaid volunteers.
Peer Reviewers: we are currently at full strength so far as our peer review panel goes. Thankyou to everyone who has sent in an application and CV.
Book and Conference Reviewers: If you are attending an academic conference or other relevant event in this field, anywhere in the world, please feel free to submit a short summary article (in Rich Text Format only please) to socacademicstudymagicATbtopenworld.com, replacing the AT with the @ symbol. We have had to remove all direct emailing links from the site due to relentless spamming. Please contact us in advance with ideas for book reviews as we may already have a particular title covered, and please note that we do not suggest titles to potential review authors.
Writing guidelines can be found elsewhere on this site (follow links to journal and faqs), but all reviews must be of less than 1000 words, and preferably less than 800.
